Common Use For This Medicine
1- For the maintenance treatment of CYTOMEGALOVIRUS (CMV) INFECTION OF THE EYES in patients with acquired immune deficiency
syndrome (AIDS).
2- For the prevention of CYTOMEGALOVIRAL DISEASE in patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor
How To Use This Medicine
Use this medicine exactly as directed on the label, unless instructed differently by your doctor
* Take this medicine WITH food, a meal, or a snack. Do not take on an empty stomach.
* Drink several glasses of WATER during the day, unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
* This medicine is NOT A CURE. Patients need long-term management.
* Use this medicine for the full prescribed treatment period. DO NOT skip doses or discontinue unless directed by your doctor.
What To Do If You Miss A Dose
Take when remembered unless time for next dose. No double doses.
How To Store This Medicine
Keep in original closed container in a dark, cool, and dry place away from children. Discard unneeded medicine.
Call Your Doctor Immediately If You Experience
Fever; Infection; Chills; Unusual bleeding or bruising.
Other Side Effects
Diarrhea; Abnormal blood cell count; Nausea; Anemia; Abdominal discomfort or pain; Skin rash; Decreased appetite; Vomiting;
Sweating; Neuromyopathy; Abnormally low platelet count; Burning pain, tingling, or numbness; Itching; Gas.
If symptoms are mild but do not go away or are bothersome, check with your doctor. IF ANY OF THE ABOVE SIDE EFFECTS IS SEVERE,
CALL YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY.
Precautions And Warnings
* Safety of use during pregnancy has not been established. This medicine SHOULD NOT BE USED DURING PREGNANCY unless benefit
justifies potential risk to the fetus. CALL YOUR DOCTOR.
* RENAL IMPAIRMENT is the major toxicity of this medicine. Monitoring of renal function (urinalysis & serum creatinine) & dose
adjustment is necessary.
* This medicine may cause BLOOD PROBLEMS resulting in certain infections, slow healing, and gum bleeding. Be careful when
toothbrushing and flossing.
* It is important that your doctor monitor your BLOOD CELL COUNTS at regular intervals.
* Regular follow-up visits to your OPHTHALMOLOGIST (eye doctor) are necessary to monitor visual problems.
* Because of INTERACTION with other drugs, report the use of any other prescription and nonprescription medicines to your
doctor.
* This medicine may cause INFERTILITY.
* Women of childbearing potential should use effective CONTRACEPTION during and for 1 month following treatment.
* MEN should practice barrier CONTRACEPTIVE methods DURING AND for 3 MONTHS FOLLOWING treatment.
* This medicine may cause increased sensitivity to the sun. You should AVOID prolonged or excessive exposure to direct and/or
artificial sunlight.
